Ok, so I am on the hunt for a replacement wash n' go product since Shea Moisture Curling Souffle is just too runny and not the same quality as it had been in the past (does anyone know what happened?). So I have bought two possible wash n go replacement products recently, one of which I am going to review today. Beautiful Curls Shea Butter Curl Activating Cream is for Curly to Kinky hair types (they have an alternate product for Wavy hair types). What really made me excited about this product was that it is handmade by Alaffia who produces my favorite go-to Conditioner and Shampoo (both contain elements of Shea, Black Soap, and Honey!). So I was thinking this product is really going to suit me! I was feeling rather skeptical when I saw that it was being sold in Wholefoods. The only store-bought hair products I have had success with is Shea Moisture that is sold at Target now but outside of that everything from my favorite deep conditioner (Beeutiful Moisturizing deep conditioner) to my favorite leave-in conditioner by Karen Body Beautiful, along with other products, I have to buy online (which begs another question, why are the best products online!?).
In the end I was dissatisfied with Beautiful Curls Shea Butter Curl Activating Creamprimarily because it does the one thing I hate - it causes stiffness, crunchiness, and dryness to my 4b curls. I would like to preface that I have tried other wash n go creams and gels that have caused scarily crazy dryness (ahem, Just Natural Skin Care Herbal Gel for Curly Hair) but this was manageable dryness in that I wouldn't cringe when I touched my hair or that I was afraid if I got too close to fire it would be set ablaze! Also cream is not the word to describe the texture of the product, its more like watery, conditioner with some slight thickness to it.
In the beginning it gave great stretch to the hair but if you don't use a diffuser you instantly loose the big hair length and it becomes like a mini fro. Second day hair is essentially dry hair but I sprayed my own concoction of aloe vera juice, Qhemet Biologic Burdock Root Butter Cream, and glycerin to breath life back into it but instead of a wash n go, I just took an afro pick and picked it out for a semi-professional looking afro to wear to work today.
Overall, I would try this product again with a leave-in conditioner to see if I could combat the dryness factor, but If I get the same results that is a mix of dryness, crunchiness, and stiffness in my mini curls then I am going to have to put it to the side and continue my hunt for a good wash n go product.
